Milton Keynes 40th Birthday trip to The Centre MK, by Alex Coaton age 11.
On 23rd January 1967 construction of Milton Keynes was started. Exactly 40 years later on 23rd January 2007 children from the preparatory department at MKPS went to celebrate Milton Keynes’ birthday at the exhibition in Middleton Hall, the Centre MK.
When we got there the first thing we saw were some old photographs of Milton Keynes. There were two pictures comparing Milton Keynes in 1967 and the same scene in 2007. It was amazing to see how much Milton Keynes has grown! We then made our way to the MK Dons’ stand. The new MK Dons stadium was built especially to open for Milton Keynes’ birthday and I am sure that the stadium will be a huge success.
Talking about success, there was some information about how Milton Keynes had become so successful. When Milton Keynes was first built people were doubtful of the grid system. But they were wrong, for now you can drive from one side of Milton Keynes to the other in about 12 minutes, which you can’t do in any other city.
The last thing we did was look at the Bletchley Park exhibition. They did code breaking at Bletchley Park in World War II. One of the most famous code breakers was Alan Turing. He used to ride his bicycle right by our school, but it was just a field back then.
As we were leaving a person from the BBC came up to us and asked to take a photograph of us looking at the pictures, so now there is a picture of us on the BBC website. The exhibition was very interesting and I would like to thank Mrs Manson and Mr Brett for taking us there.
